The first recorded attempt at making Austin un-weird.
[CRAWLSPACE LOG — TRANSMISSION #1888]
Keep your heads down. I’ll make this transmission brief.
I’m sending this report from under the floorboards in Sector 9, just behind the vegan breakfast taco shop on Airport Blvd.
The Algorithm has been jamming my terminal all morning, but the line is clean… for now.
I pulled a piece of 130-year-old telemetry out of the Austin municipal logs today.
My intelligence tells me that long before Speedway became a pedestrian bike lane for UT students and Hyde Park turned into an urban hideout for PhDs and $18 cold brews, this place was a high-society, 19th-century Shangri-La.
Apparently, some 1890s pretty boy real estate guy, Monroe Shipe, built a fancy horse track known as the “finest in the South.”
Hyde Park even hosted the Texas State Fair before some big money guys up in Dallas stole the dream and the cash dried up.
And Speedway—you know, the street with those cool Moonlight Towers? He dropped $4,000 to link the grandstands straight downtown.
And now for the important part of this dispatch.
Pay close attention.
Apparently, this Shipe guy hit a little glitch in his plans.
All of the fancy people in their fancy carriages trotting up and down Speedway got a little nervous about what locals today call “The Austin State Hospital”—you know, that big, scary stone building at 45th and Lamar.
Well, apparently, they didn’t have a marketing guy back then, so they just named it what it was: The State Insane Asylum. Put the locals on edge.
Back to his problem. Well, he couldn’t move the building. So he did what any good marketing guy would do: give it a prettier name.
My feed on this told me he wanted to rename it: “Restorative Retreat.” Well, that never happened, but it was a good marketing move.
[CRACKLE — FEED INTERRUPT]
Listen, folks... I think they’re starting to jam my signal again. I’ve left the diagram for this dispatch right above. Study it carefully.
And please, pass this dispatch along. There’s a lot of folks out there who aren’t getting this signal at all.
Hit the share button right below this dispatch.
And don’t be afraid—nobody’s gonna spam you or put you on a list for a teeth whitening system.
Listen, I gotta go.
Apparently, there’s a lady on South Congress who’s about to give her email address to a funnel site for a Keto diet. I gotta get there and see what I can do to help her.
If you are reading this, you are standing inside the apparatus. Look up.
